recent times have transcended their practical purpose to become objects of
power, domination, and aspiration. This talk pre-dates the exhibit Walk This Way that will open in April, 2018, at the New-York Historical
Society, Edward Maeder as consulting curator. The exhibit and Maeder’s
presentation highlight examples from the Stuart Weitzman Collection of Historic
Shoes assembled over decades, with themes ranging from the Suffragettes and
prohibition to popular dance, films and high fashion.
Edward Maeder has been active in the museum world
for nearly 40 years. He is a well-known costume historian, author and lecturer
and has been a curator in New York, Los Angeles, and Historic Deerfield. He was
the founding director of the Bata Shoe Museum, the world’s largest private
collection, in Toronto, Ontario. Maeder has been a consultant for historic
textiles and costumes since his retirement and is currently a Research
Associate in the Theatre Department at Smith College in Northampton.
