Shoes in recent times have transcended their practical purpose to become objects of power, domination, and aspiration. This talk pre-dates the exhibit Walk This Way that will open in April, 2018, at the New-York Historical Society, Edward Maeder as consulting curator. The exhibit and Maeder’s presentation highlight examples from the Stuart Weitzman Collection of Historic Shoes assembled over decades, with themes ranging from the Suffragettes and prohibition to popular dance, films and high fashion.

Edward Maeder has been active in the museum world for nearly 40 years. He is a well-known costume historian, author and lecturer and has been a curator in New York, Los Angeles, and Historic Deerfield. He was the founding director of the Bata Shoe Museum, the world’s largest private collection, in Toronto, Ontario. Maeder has been a consultant for historic textiles and costumes since his retirement and is currently a Research Associate in the Theatre Department at Smith College in Northampton.
