During the Triassic Period, Earth was much warmer than it is today (there were not any major ice sheets present). The continents were united as one supercontinent called Pangaea and the earliest dinosaurs roamed. Near the end of the Triassic, North America rifted (separated) from Africa and Eurasia. This rifting ultimately caused lava to well up and flood over sedimentary rock, which solidified into the basalt rock that caps Mt. Holyoke. Participants will explore the trees and plants in the differing habitats of the mountain, while contemplating how the changing geology influences the varieties of plants that grow there.
